FORT COLLINS - Fargreen, a Fort Collins-based startup that aims to recycle waste rice straw in Vietnam into a revenue stream for Vietnam's rice farmers, has been chosen to be one of five finalists for the international Green Challenge.
Green Challenge is the world's largest green startup pitch competition set to be held in The Netherlands Sept. 11. At stake is a top prize of $500,000 Euros and $200,000 Euros for first runner-up.
Fargreen has been on a winning streak this year, winning the $12,500 grand prize in March at the University of Washington Global Enterprise Competition in Seattle, a $5,000 prize in April during the Walmart Better Living Business Plan Challenge in Arkansas, and taking the $20,000 top prize at the CSU Blue Ocean Enterprises Collegiate Track Challenge in May in Fort Collins.
The startup also announced its first month-long farmer training workshop began June 29 in Vietnam.
Trang Tran, co-founder of Fargreen with Tanmay Telang, said the farmer training workshop marked a "milestone of our Fargreen journey."
"We just can't believe that over a year ago Fargreen was purely an idea floating in our minds," Tran said on the company's website. "Now, it is a registered business and has officially started its journey involving not just us but also our neighboring farmers in the village. What a moment!"
